Porcelain factory, Meißen

Porcelain factory, Meißen

Who has not heard of the world famous Meißen porcelain? The term „white gold“ is inseparably connected with the Saxon town. Therefore a visit of the porcelain factory is an absolute must. At the beginning of the 13th century European princes imported porcelain from China at horrendous prices.
However at the beginning of the 19th century German scientists at last discovered the secret of manufacturing porcelain and therefore it was possible to produce it in Germany.
Since 1864 the famous porcelain factory is located in the town centre of Meißen.
Only recently the factory which consisted of show rooms, a show workshop and a salesroom, was extended and now offers a second show workshop, special exhibitions and a restaurant. Since Easter 2005 guests have profited from these attractions.
In the show workshops guests can see for themselves how Meißen porcelain is produced and marvel at the finished works in the show rooms.
It is impressive to see the high level of individuality, as all the pieces are formed by hand. Visitors can find out more about porcelain and its production during a guided tour.
