In a pine-covered area, near the Bauhaus, a unique ensemble of Bauhaus buildings, amongst them the so-called Masters’ houses developed in the 1930s.
The Maters’ Houses, designed by Gropius, were built for the maters’ of the Bauhaus, the great artists of the Bauhaus period.
Amongst the buildings in the Masters’ Houses estate are the houses of Kandinsky, Klee, Feiniger, Muche and Schlemmer.
The houses were only inhabited by the masters for a very short time. They were mostly used as living space for poor families, or used differently by the town administration. Most of the houses were ruined by the beginning of the 90s, when the town decided to renovate the Masters’ Houses estate. They were expensively reconstructed and today appear in their old glory. Especially the colourful interior design and the Bauhaus exhibitions make a visit worthwhile.
